How serious is facial paralysis? Chiropractic has been shown to be effective for Bell’s palsy

The disease can affect 1 in 60 people during their lifetime. Many celebrities and politicians have been diagnosed with Bell’s palsy and affected their public image. According to CDAHK, a recent chiropractic study found that chiropractors can improve symptoms of Bell’s palsy.

NEW YORK, August 19, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — The condition called Bell’s palsy, which results in facial paralysis. It is a form of facial paralysis that results from trauma or damaged facial nerves.

“The most commonly affected muscles are the eye closure and half of the smile, such that the patient is unable to close their eyes or smile on half of their face,” Dr. Eric Chun-Pu ChuPresident of the Association of Chiropractic Physicians of hong kong (CDAHK). “They end up looking like someone with a crooked face.”

A facial nerve, called the 7th cranial nerve, runs through a narrow bony canal in the skull. The nerve controls sensation and helps move small muscles in the face.

The standard treatment for Bell’s palsy is conservative therapy to minimize the duration of facial palsy, but steroids and antiviral drugs may also be given to control facial palsy. Some patients help manage muscle control through facial exercises like “eyebrow push-ups.”

Jolie told the media that she credits conservative therapy with helping her recover. “Many research cases have shown that acupuncture and chiropractic can help,” Chu said.

Most recent studies have identified chiropractic as beneficial for shoulder pain (1), back pain (2), and neck pain (3). The hong kong case study (4), published in the August 16, examined the incidence of facial and facial Bell’s palsy in people receiving multimodal chiropractic therapy. The study reviewed 12 studies and identified that 85% of these patients also had face or neck pain. They illustrated the improvement of Bell’s palsy and concomitant trigeminal neuropathy with multimodal chiropractic care, including spinal manipulation.

“For patients who experience symptoms months to years after the initial onset, there are other, more invasive options, including chiropractic multi-model therapy to help correct the appearance of sagging,” Chu said.
